In September 2022, a powerful undersea eruption in Tonga’s Home Reef volcano created a brand-new island in the Pacific Ocean. Within days, lava and ash built up a mound rising about 10 meters above sea level and 170 meters wide. Satellite images showed the island forming, cooling, and slowly changing shape as waves and eruptions reshaped it.
