Nepali (नेपाली, Nepālī, [ˈnepali]), [b] is an Indo-Aryan language, belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family, native to the Himalayan region of South Asia. It is the official and most-widely spoken language of Nepal, where it also serves as a lingua franca.
Nepali is a language in the Indo-Aryan family, which is primarily spoken in Nepal. Nepali is also spoken in the eastern parts of India, and in Myanmar (Burma) and Bhutan.
The Nepali are descendants of three major migrations from India, Tibet and North Burma, and the Chinese province of Yunnan via Assam. Among the earliest inhabitants were the Kirat of the eastern region, Newars of the Kathmandu Valley, aboriginal Tharus of the Terai plains and the Khas Pahari people of the far-western hills.
